British Air Force Typhoon jets have joined forces with French aircraft in a joint strike on an subterranean weapons facility in Syria used by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, pinpointed through intelligence, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was situated in mountainous terrain just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a series of approach shafts providing entry to the facility... early reports indicate the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the attack conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - also known as Daesh - established militant control over parts of Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This action underscores the UK's leading role, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to stamp out any resurgence of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," UK Defence Secretary the minister said.

British military aircraft have performed patrols over Syria to "prevent any attempted comeback" of the group subsequent to its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank the personnel of the UK armed forces involved in this mission for their professionalism and their valour," Healey added. "They were part of a great many UK service members deployed over the festive period. This mission, to remove militants who pose a risk to our way of life, demonstrates how British military are ready to step up, all year round, protecting the UK at home and powerful internationally."

In December, the US military executed what it called a "massive strike" targeting Daesh sites in Syria, following an attack killed two American soldiers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. reports Daesh still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in both countries.
