Together Is Now Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Partnership.

Consider this a test for those in enduring partnerships who appreciate the horror genre: Settle in with your loved one and view Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie recently had its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. At first glance, it might appear like conventional biological terror, but inside Together lies a deep examination about the ways we decide to love one another.

A Debut Feature Delving into Relationship Dynamics

Together marks the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It stars Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have stayed together for over ten years. Having wed in actuality in 2017, the actors infuse a special spark to their characters, skillfully embodying both the good and bad of a committed partnership.

The narrative begins when the couple relocate from the urban environment to the rural area for professional reasons. A commonly used plot device, sure, but that’s primarily where the tropes end. Together transforms into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the pair’s relationship as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Paranormal Spark

While hiking near their rural residence, a tempest descends, and the protagonists fall into an subterranean cavern. After a night spent there and managing to escape, a mysterious influence takes hold of the couple. This force creates a supernatural closeness between them that goes exceeding emotional intimacy.

The entire film is a gradually intensifying of scares, interspersing elements of hallucinatory nightmares, disturbing (but tastefully done) physical transformations, and genuinely funny dialogue (sometimes amidst something disturbing). Michael Shanks skillfully blends these components seamlessly and delivers them in a slowly mounting aura of dread.

Complex Characterizations

A significant portion of Together is solely Brie and Franco, and they skillfully illustrate manifold depths to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Her self-assurance and emotional bond is waning due to a distance. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his unwillingness to pursue anything but his struggling artistic pursuits inexorably rises.

Conversely, Tim feels trapped and separated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve relocated rural and far away from his network of friends. He dreads the idea of completely losing his individual identity in another person. This fear is amplified by the circumstance he lacks a driver's license and needs Millie for transportation.

The director's cleverest decision in Together never makes Tim or Millie the definite antagonist.

Both characters face the kind of problems that come with most partnerships a decade in. Fundamentally, they have affection for one another. They still laugh together, offer support, and are vulnerable at times. But below this facade, there’s an persistent current of uncertainty about their future together.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the paranormal elements in Together symbolize these fears of unhealthy attachment and fully committing to a partner, the metaphor avoids being hamfisted or pretentious. Instead, these visceral horror elements present a ideal counterpart to the relationship narrative. Both the supernatural and the personal enhance each other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s final act, which remains unspoiled, has left audiences divided on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. Accounts suggest that single viewers have seen the movie as a powerful case for staying single. Conversely, a few pairs having disagreements found that the film actually helped them reconcile.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own response could function as a revealing measure of how you perceive partnership. Will the finale sow feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a positive outlook on love? Will you recognize your own traits in one of the characters and scream at your TV, or simply turn to your significant other and say, “I’d do that for you”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can experience today.
